It gives me immense pleasure and great joy to make an endorsement on the prospectus of Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College, Sylhet. This college is the outcome of a long cherished dream of mine.
From very early days of my life I have thought that if I ever get over the hump I will make sure, I give something back. So when I fell into good fortune I wanted to share it with those less fortunate than myself. I decided to utilize my humble contribution for general upliftment of the society. That is why I have either founded or actively supported the establishment of many schools, colleges, Madrasa’s and other charitable organizations for the benefit of society.
It became my cherished dream to establish a medical college along with a hospital which will produce a group of medical graduates with best possible professional knowledge and training with high moral character and an attitude of service above self. It will also provide medical care to the suffering people.
I am happy now that the college along with its attached 750-bedded hospital has been established with all modern facilities to impart knowledge and training to the students and to provide health care facilities to the needy. The college now possesses a team of highly qualified, experienced and devoted teachers and staff who are putting up their best efforts to produce well qualified and trained medical graduates with high ethical values to serve the suffering humanity. I am confident that the students of the college will take advantage of these opportunities to acquire knowledge, training and moral values with devotion and determination to make themselves the best in the field of medical profession and earn laurels for themselves and the college.
Finally I acknowledge my wife late Mrs Rabeya Khatun Chowdhury for her contribution in accomplishing this gigantic task. She is no longer with us but I believe, her memory and dedication will encourage us to build this college a unique one.
I am sure if we continue our efforts sincerely this college will make a definite mark on the national health care system.

DANOBIR DR. SYED RAGIB ALI (Ph.D)Danobir Dr. Ragib Ali is a man with rare endowment. From a modest start he has become one of the richest man of the country. His epoch making philanthropic projects and charitable campaigns have earned him the title “Danobir” (Philanthropic Hero). He is a household name all over the country especially among the poor because of his patronage for the downtrodden people.
Danobir Dr. Ragib Ali was born on 10 th October 1938 in a noble but impoverished family of village Talibpur now known as Ragib Nagar of Upazila: Bishwnath, District: Sylhet. He is the fifth of the eight sons of late Alhaj Syed Rashid Ali and late Begum Rabeya Banu. They are the descendants of Syed Muhammad Yakub an Afghan who came to this area as the military chief of Khawja Osman Khan Lohani a pathan, the then ruler of the region.
He studied in the local school and Raza G. C. High School and College of Sylhet. He started his career early in life. He went to United Kingdom at the age of 18 years to further his education and to try to change his lot. With hard work and perseverance he could transform himself from an ordinary waiter to a leading entrepreneur. He built up a successful restaurant business, acquired a huge wealth through share market and real estate business. His foresight, exceptional business acumen and strategic vision, honesty, talents and energy were the key factors for achievement of these wonderful feats. But being a real patriot and true son of the soil he returned to his native country with all his funds to contribute in national development. As an astute entrepreneur he became, within a short period of time, a leading industrialist, a renowned businessman, a foremost tea planter and a famous banker of the country.
Danobir Dr. Ragib Ali has an endless contribution in social upliftment. His endeavour in this field is diverse and manifold, in promoting education, healthcare, sports, culture, literary works, journalism, communication etc. He has made many schools, colleges, universities and madrashas. One of these is Jalalabad Ragib-Rabeya Medical College and Hospital, which has become an excellent centre for medical education and healthcare. Millions, poor and rich alike are being benefited from these. A great philanthropist and a definitive patron of the poor as he is, he devoted himself for their well being. He has invested a major portion of his funds for their upliftment. His philanthropy extends to every aspect of their life. He has made many roads, bridge, culverts etc. In his name there are more than 220 philanthropic projects, which are greatly contributing in changing life of millions of the less privileged.
In his personal life he prefers a simple living and maintains absolute austerity. He is very polite in his dealings and mixes freely with people of every walks of life. He is happily married with Begum Rabeya Khatun Chowdhury. She herself is an illustrious lady and philanthropic personality and is an inspiring force to Mr. Ragib Ali in his social and philanthropic works. They are blessed with a son and a daughter.
